Councillor Allen Brett has been ousted as the leader of Rochdale council

Rochdale council has a new leader after the local Labour Party voted to oust Coun Allen Brett.

At their annual meeting on Sunday Rochdale Labour group voted to replace Coun Brett, despite the party consolidating its huge majority by holding all 15 seats it was defending in Thursday's local election.

He has been succeeded by West Middleton councillor Neil Emmott.

On Sunday Rochdale Labour Group tweeted: "Today @LabourRochdale has voted to for a leadership change.

"A full statement will be released. We would like to thank Cllr Brett for his service. CONGRATULATIONS to Cllr Neil Emmott."

Speaking in the immediate aftermath of Thursday's election Coun Brett, who took over as council leader in 2017 after Coun Richard Farnell stepped down after he was criticised by the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, told the Manchester Evening News he was anticipating a challenge to his leadership.

Coun Emmott has represented West Middleton since 2010.

He also stood as a councillor in Heywood South from 1986 to 1994.
