Council warns Glastonbury it may limit the amount of alcohol people can take inside

Members of Mendip District Council have warned Glastonbury Festival that it may limit the amount of alcohol guests can take in to the site.

The warning came as part of a wide-ranging report published last year by Mendip District Council about previous events. The report also mentions several key recommendations for areas of improvement.

According to the Daily Mail, the current rules state that you can bring your own alcohol into the Glastonbury Festival, but amounts considered 'beyond reasonable personal use' will be confiscated at the entrance.

In the past, this has lead to a wide variety of amusing pictures being posted online of visitors using unique contraptions to smuggle crates of alcohol onto the site.

However, the council announced that it wishes to provide a 'safe event', and that therefore it may introduce a potential limit to the amount of drink people can bring in.

"The Glastonbury Festival has a worldwide reputation and as such it means that we have a huge responsibility in ensuring that it undertakes its statutory duties," explained Claire Malcolmson, of Mendip District Council.

"The purpose of the licence, the licensing objectives and other legislation is to ensure event organisers provide a safe event whilst minimising disruption and nuisance to the local community."

Other areas of improvement highlighted in the report include food hygiene and safety, noise complaints, security and transport.

The council made a number of proposed changes in 2017 which were then implemented by the festival for 2019.

No event was held in 2018 to allow for the farm site to recover, and the pandemic saw the cancellation of 2020's festival dates.

However, with festivals finally returning earlier this summer, organisers have already begun introducing new measures and changes to the events. Many, for instance, required guests to take Covid tests before entering the sites.

As such, it is reasonable to expect yet more changes, like the ones proposed by Mendip District Council, at future festivals.
