Council warn Wishaw tenants to be aware of scammers texting asking for rent money

North Lanarkshire Council has warned Wishaw tenants to be aware of scammers texting members of the public asking for rent money.

The local authority took to social media to make the public aware after reports surfaced of bogus messaging in relation to rent payments.

A council spokesperson said: “We received a report from one of our tenants via our Airdrie housing office. The person reported receiving a text message looking for bank details and claiming they owed rent money.

“We would never contact anyone or ask for bank details like this.

“Unfortunately there seems to have been a real rise in the number of scams going on recently and we are trying to make sure our residents know for the signs to look out for. “We are sharing messaging from Police Scotland, Scam Share etc. warning of these types of fraud and for the public to remain vigilant.”

The council added that tenants should be careful if they receive unexpected texts or emails asking for bank details or financial information and if they think they have been the victim of fraud, contact your bank or the police immediately.
