City of Newcastle could offer up council venues to the federal government to support the expedited delivery of COVID-19 vaccinations.
Labor councillors will table a motion on Tuesday night noting "Australia's slow progress in vaccinating the population" and "calls from public health experts for vaccine hubs to be established to expedite vaccination and deliver herd immunity".
The motion proposes council makes its buildings and land available should either the federal or state government elect to set up vaccine centres in the region.
The state government has moved towards using hubs to deliver the vaccine rollout to health care workers, with one set to be established at Sydney Olympic Park.
"Novocastrians are understandably eager to get vaccinated, and are disappointed by the lack of progress," deputy lord mayor Declan Clausen said.
"In past pandemics and health crises, council venues have been utilised as vaccine hubs to deliver community vaccination programs."
He added: "In recent weeks the National Cabinet has talked about moving away from Scott Morrison's model of GP vaccination towards mass vaccination hubs.
"We're offering the Commonwealth and state government use of our city venues to help accelerate the roll out of vaccinations to the Newcastle community.
"This program could involve the use of City Hall or other council venues like libraries, halls, community centres, so that Novocastrians can get vaccinated as soon as possible."
