Council to launch legal proceedings to evict travellers from playing fields

Council bosses say eviction proceedings will be launched after travellers moved on to playing fields in West Didsbury.

Around 50 vehicles and a number of horses are currently on Merseybank playing fields.

Junior football club Fletcher Moss Rangers said gates were broken and recently maintained football pitches damaged.

Posting on Twitter the club, which is based on the site, said it has been forced to cancel a children's football summer camp as a result.

Police and Manchester city council have visited the site.

The council said it would be launching eviction proceedings as soon as possible.

Greater Manchester Police said the force received a report at 11.30am on Friday and officers attended the fields.

The council, too, said it conducted a welfare visit.

One witness reported around 50 caravans and a dozen horses and said: "There are cars and caravans everywhere.

"The council and police are there too."

Manchester city council reported 50 vehicles and around 60 people on the site.

There are also said to be a number of dogs and horses.

A council spokesman said police were monitoring the situation.

"We conducted a welfare visit alongside the police and we will be beginning eviction proceedings shortly," they said.

"We have to work within the legal process."

Greater Manchester Police said they would be maintaining a presence in the area.

Gypsies and Travellers are protected from discrimination by the Race Relations Act 1976 and the Human Rights Act 1998, together with all ethnic groups who have a particular culture, language or values.
