Council to check trees on south Liverpool street after one crashes to the ground

Liverpool Council said they will be reviewing the condition of the remaining trees on a residential street after a falling tree caused homes to "shake" last night.

Neighbours on Dovedale Road in Mossley Hill were woken by a loud crash caused by a massive tree falling to the ground.

Nobody was hurt and no damage was caused to cars or surrounding homes on the street, close to Penny Lane.

Liverpool Council dispatched a team in the early hours of Wednesday to make the site safe.

Today they confirmed that the rest of the trees on the street will now be subject to a safety inspection.

A council spokesperson said: “We were alerted shortly before midnight that a tree had fallen on Dovedale Road and a team were dispatched to the scene and had it removed and the site made safe just after 1am.

"The remaining felled timber will be removed today.

"The local tree inspector is currently reviewing the condition of the remaining trees in the road to ensure that no further works are required."

The tree fell near to Liberal Democrat Councillor Richard Kemp's home.

Councillor Richard Kemp CBE, said: "The tree came down at about 11.30 last night with a tremendous crash.

"By 1.10am it had been chopped up, moved neatly to the kerbside and the roads swept. It was great work from our Liverpool Council staff.

"What worries me is that it looked, after 120 years, to be a sound tree.

"We can now see that it was rotten inside.

"There are about 40 of these trees along this section of Dovedale Road and I am asking the council to inspect them urgently.

"We all love our trees, which capture carbon and make our area look nice for residents and visitors alike, but they must be safe.

"What would have happened if it had fallen when the road was busy?

"We'll work out how to replace the tree with a sapling as soon as possible but I doubt that any of us will be around to see it grow to full maturity."
