Council tells drivers to 'injure now' in Welsh translation mix-up

A sign has appeared on a Welsh road advising motorists "injure now" instead of "slow down now".

The sign reads "anafwch nawr" (injure now) instead of "arafwch nawr" (slow down).

A spokesman from Neath Port Talbot Council said arrangements are being made to replace it.

Hywel Edwards from Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen spotted the sign on a stretch of road known as the Garth between Cwmgors and Pontardawe.

The 42-year-old said he "double took" when he first drove past it on Saturday while on his way to shop in Pontardawe.

"They've recently changed road markings along that road and on Saturday as I drove past I double took when I saw it.

"I stopped on my way home to take a picture.

"It was still there when I drove past this morning."

As a Welsh speaker, Mr Edwards didn't take offence personally, but others have.

"To be honest, some of my Welsh nationalist friends are disgusted and can't believe it.

"Personally, I find it quite comical. I don't know who's in charge of it, but it's obviously just a mistake.

"It doesn't bother me or upset me, but it may upset others."

Mr Edwards shred the picture on social media where it was shared over one hundred times.

One person described the mishap as "unbelievable", while another  commented: "just shows one wrong letter can completely change a sentence."

Jeremy Vine receives Welsh language lesson

A spokesman for Neath Port Talbot Council said: “We are aware of a spelling error on a recently installed road sign and arrangements are being made to replace it with a corrected version.

"Having investigated, we can confirm that the correct information was provided to the sign manufacturer, however we regret that the error on the finished signage was not spotted prior to installation.

"In the interim all wording has been removed from the sign.”
