Council tax: How to find out your band as Rishi Sunak announces rebate in England

Millions of households in England will receive a council tax rebate of £150 to help with soaring energy bills.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the measure as regulator Ofgem raised its annual energy price cap by 54 per cent to £1,971.

It means the average household in England, Wales and Scotland will be faced with a bill £693 higher than before.

The one-off rebate applies to homes in England in council tax bands A to D – around 80 per cent of all homes.

It will be made directly by local authorities from April and will not need to be repaid, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Mr Sunak also announced all domestic electricity customers will get £200 off their energy bills from October.

Your property's band determines how much council tax you pay annually, with those ranking A paying the least and those ranking H paying the most.

Use the UK government's online tool to find out which band your home is in.

Simply enter your postcode and select your address from the drop-down list.

The website will tell you all the information you need to know about your council tax band as well as the local authority your property falls under.
