Council Tax debt bombshell as Scots fall millions of pounds behind

Desperate Scots have racked up £6.4million in council tax debt – and it is just the tip of the ice berg.

The figure is owed by just 3399 people looking for help at Citizens Advice branches in Scotland, meaning the full figure will be much worse.

The average works out at £1900 per person, which is far higher than the £1147 national average council tax.

It led to calls for struggling Scots to check whether they can claim a council tax reduction, worth an average £700 saving a year.

Myles Fitt, Citizens Advice Scotland financial health spokesman, said: “This debt is set against a landscape where fewer households are claiming council tax reduction compared to the old scheme.”

The service has set up an online tool to help people check if they’re eligible.
