Council stops taking birth and death registrations during coronavirus lockdown

ONLY emergency birth and death registration enquiries will be taken by South Lanarkshire Council during the coronavirus pandemic.

After receiving the latest advice from the Scottish and UK Governments, the council took the decision to postpone registrations for births, deaths and stillbirths.

All face-to-face appointments have been postponed following advice from the National Records of Scotland.

Once guidance from the Registrar General has been received, further advice - including implications for the 21-day limit to register a birth - will be issued by the council.

Emergency birth, death and stillbirth enquiries can still be made by calling 01698 453792 or 01698 454023 between 10am and 3pm Monday to Friday.

In a post on their website, South Lanarkshire Council said: "Due to the coronavirus issue and the latest advice from the UK and Scottish Governments a number of important temporary changes have been made to the council’s registration and associated services.

"All birth registration appointments are postponed. We are waiting on guidance from the Registrar General, however please do not worry about the 21-day time limit.

"Registering a death or stillbirth - all face-to-face appointments have been postponed following advice from the National Records of Scotland.

"If you consider that you have an emergency registration enquiry then please call 01698 453792/454023 between 10am and 3pm Monday to Friday.

"No civil ceremony bookings will be taken until further notice. We will contact couples who have ceremonies booked with us to discuss their options."

"You can still order extracts and certificates for events already registered."
