Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC) is seeking bids for land at Salt Lake in Porthcawl, where a new supermarket will be built.
The two-acre site, known locally as "The Green", is now open to formal bids until December 02 2020 at 12pm.
The council is looking for a developer to buy the land and build a supermarket there as part of its plan to regenerate Porthcawl. Funds obtained by sale will be reinvested into the council's regeneration plans, including improvements to John Street car park.
Councillor Charles Smith, BCBC's cabinet member for regeneration, said: “There has been strong interest in the site to date and it is anticipated that multiple bids will be submitted for consideration.
He added: “A key requirement for all bids is the need to demonstrate compliance with the planning development brief which outlines that this site is to provide a gateway building at the entrance to the town which is of high quality and a bespoke design.
“The development will unlock funds that will be reinvested into infrastructure improvements and further stages of the regeneration plans, including work to upgrade and improve the nearby Hillsboro Car Park, a housing development next to the new store, a leisure scheme, a hotel and further housing on the seafront.”
The council's cabinet gave officers the go-ahead to start advertising the land at Salt Lake Car Park to potential developers during a meeting on September 15 2020.
In early 2021, the council’s cabinet will determine which store will be developed on the site, which is being marketed by chartered surveyors and property consultants EJ Hales.
In 2017, BCBC bought Salt Lake Car Park for £3.33m following a decades-long battle with two local families who owned the lease for the land. The supermarket will be the first step in the regeneration of Porthcawl.
The council says there will be "clear links and pedestrian access" from the supermarket to John Street in line with its planning conditions.
Land at Coney Beach and Sandy Bay will also be developed as part of the town's regeneration, including new homes, a new school and infrastructure improvements.
