Council responds to Travellers and 'dog unit' security vans

Liverpool Council have responded to news that a group of Travellers have set up camp on land not far from the city centre.

Yesterday we reported that a number of caravans, motorhomes and other vehicles had set up on the land bounded by Great Homer Street, Jennifer Avenue and Skirving Street.

As well as the caravans and motor homes, images also show two vans parked up that are clearly marked with signs saying 'Security' and 'Dog Unit'.

A local resident got in touch with images of the camp, which has been set up despite clear No Entry signs surrounding the site.

While it is not clear whether these security vans are associated with the Traveller camp or the owners of the land, the resident told the ECHO that when he asked those in the vans why they were there he was told it was because there were people staying on the land.

We contacted Liverpool City Council about the situation and today they got back to us with a statement.

A spokesperson for Liverpool City Council said: “We were notified by a member of the public about the arrival of these vehicles on land on Skirving Street on Tuesday.

“As the land is privately owned, the council’s role is to notify key stakeholders including the landowners and to offer advice and guidance.

"We can confirm this process is under way in accordance with the Unauthorised Encampment Process."

The council said it is also making enquiries as to who is responsible for the dog unit security vans.

There have been a number of Traveller camps seen around Merseyside in recent days and weeks.

Earlier this week a group of caravans left an old gasworks site in Birkenhead, Wirral after several days after they were issued with an eviction notice.

And last week complaints were made by people living in the Crosby area who were becoming increasingly frustrated about a Traveller camp near the town's famous beach.
