Plans for a hot food takeaway in Cathkin have been met with a chilly reception by South Lanarkshire Council.
The local authority has knocked back proposals to convert a disused pet grooming shop on 12 Braemar Road into a food outlet.
The plan had attracted 10 complaints from locals, who were concerned at the impact and noise on the local area, while a petition signed by 43 people was also submitted against the plan. However, others on social media had reacted more positively to the application.
The council ruled that: “It represents a form of development that would have a significant adverse impact on the amenity of the surrounding residential properties by virtue of increased noise and disturbance.”
The plans had also created fears among some residents that anti-social behaviour would increase.
A large flue had also been proposed for the building, which was another reason for concern.
One local wrote: “The odour which will be generated will affect my property and the extract duct is unsightly and will be a climbing frame for youths who regularly climb on the shop roofs.”
Another added: “The rear of the shops has never been maintained and remains a health and safety issue with drug taking, drinking alcohol, urinating, fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour.
“Police have had to be called on a number of occasions. A hot food takeaway would exacerbate the problems and would have a serious impact on residents’ mental health.”
South Lanarkshire Council’s report into the takeaway agreed with these claims.
They stated: “It is considered that the site, due to its relatively cut off location from the main road, is not a suitable location for a hot-food takeaway given the increased activity that will result from the development and the potential for increased anti-social behaviour.”
The proposed shop would have been open from noon until 10pm seven days a week.
