Council refuse planning permission for Lidl's Stanecastle store

North Ayrshire Council have refused Lidl's plans to build a store near the town's Stanecastle roundabout - costing around 40 jobs for the area.

Yesterday, the council's planning team rejected the Lidl store plans as it would encourage more car use as it is an "out-of-centre retail development".

The planning team also refused the plans - which were submitted in October last year - on the grounds the Stanecastle site would "set an undesirable precedent for the development of unjustified out-of-centre retail developments within North Ayrshire".

It also went on to say Lidl's plans for the Stanecastle site would not be in keeping with the predominantly residential character of the surrounding area and that the proposed site is not suitable for the area.

The decision letter stated: "The proposed site is not suitable for a large retail development as it would compete with the town centre and there are preferable sites available in, or close to the town centre."

The full letter can be found here.
