Council praises 'dedication and commitment' of school staff during coronavirus crisis

STAFF at schools across South Lanarkshire are being thanked for their hard work during the coronavirus crisis.

From today (Thursday, March 26), just 20 schools in the region will remain open as hubs for the children of key workers including those in the emergency services and the NHS.

Tony McDaid, executive director of education, expressed his heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers in schools and educational settings throughout South Lanarkshire for going the extra mile to support those working in the NHS, emergency services and the care sector, as they rise to the ever demanding challenges of keeping our loved ones as safe as they can from the coronavirus.

He said: “We are all living in a different world and we are right to be apprehensive about the days ahead.

“However, the dedication and commitment of our staff and those who have volunteered to offer their support has been outstanding.

“I fully appreciate the worries and concerns that are around, but in these unprecedented times the importance of working tirelessly together to support our communities could not be greater.

“We must continue to focus on the firm belief that what we are doing is the right thing, and to look after ourselves and each other.

“Together we are making a difference to the lives of many in our communities and I convey my personal thanks for this continued support.”

Hubs run Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm and will provide a range of activities for pupils.

The hubs are open to children of parents/carers who are staff working for the NHS, police, fire service, ambulance service, prison service, in health and social care, energy workers and social workers.

South Lanarkshire Council have said they have considered carefully the need to comply with government guidelines about hygiene and social distancing.

The council has also said that they will monitor the use of the emergency childcare service for key workers over the next few days before extending the provision to other key worker categories.
