Council postpones by-elections as region prepares for level four restrictions

Two by-elections in North Lanarkshire have been delayed by the area returning to lockdown due to coronavirus.

The elections in Fortissat and Thorniewood, previously intended to be held today (Thursday November 19), were called off soon after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced the maximum level of restrictions would be applied across much of Scotland from Friday, including North Lanarkshire.

Schools which were to be used as polling stations will instead open as normal.

March 4, 2021 has been provisionally set as the new polling day.

A council spokesperson said: “While case numbers are on a downward trend in Lanarkshire, they are still high. In reaching this decision, the Returning Officer has considered that it is inappropriate from a public safety point of view that the by-elections take place the day before level 4 restrictions come into force.”

Postal votes already returned will be securely destroyed
