There is a plan to increase the number of car parking spaces in Mountain Ash town centre to ease parking problems in the area.
A proposal to redevelop Rhos Square, known locally as Guto’s Square, on Oxford Street and increase the number of spaces from 23 to 30 has been recommended for approval by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council planning officers.
The works would involve the land to the north of the square and the area between the existing car park and Oxford Street being resurfaced to accommodate 15 off-street parking spaces with the existing car park area being altered and resurfaced to accommodate a further 15 off-street parking spaces.
There would be four disabled parking spaces provided and five cycle stands would be installed at the north eastern corner of the site with the public foot paths surrounding the site would also set to be upgraded.
The public square and public toilet block would also be refurbished as part of the plan and there would be six public benches installed.
The council, which is the applicant, has said the proposed works are needed to alleviate current on-street parking problems experienced throughout the town centre, to improve the current public facilities in the town centre and to generally improve the visual appearance of the town centre.
No objections to the application have been received from members of the public.
The application is due to go before the council’s planning and development committee on Thursday,
