Council offer help over weddings

West Lothian Civic Centre normally sees dozens of people married by the council’s registrar at civil ceremonies in the building.

That was until the lockdown in March which prompted a delay to many couples’ big days.

From a few thousand people a day using the building it has been down to a handful since then.

And for a "significant number" the lockdown has meant a delay to their big day. Just as churches have been kept empty by the lockdown so has the registrar's office and many have seen their wedding plans put on hold.

However, West Lothian Council say they are taking steps to help those affected.

A spokesman for the council said: “National Records of Scotland have made special arrangements for couples who had already submitted their legal paperwork and have had to re-arrange their dates.

“As a council we have also reimbursed any couples wishing to cancel existing bookings if they have decided to wait and see how things go over the coming year.

“We have allowed couples to move dates for registrar bookings if they wished to.

“We will continue to follow the up-to-date national guidance around services and look forward to the day when we are once again able to welcome happy couples.”
