Council makes change at Fishponds junction after serious motorbike crash

Work has been carried out to improve visibility at a "dangerous" junction, just days after a motorcyclist was seriously hurt there.

A 56-year-old man was taken to hospital with potentially life-changing injuries, following a crash involving a motorbike and car in Fishponds.

Police taped off the road for hours after the crash on Thursday (August 23), which happened at the point where Stanbury Avenue meets Downend Road.

Residents quickly called for action at the junction, saying it was "dangerous" and "an accident waiting to happen," due to poor visibility caused by parked vehicles.

Bristol City Council has now confirmed that its teams have visited the site, and have taken action to help clear the line of sight.

Trees have been pruned back to prevent foliage from obscuring the view, and the authority has pledged to "monitor the area closely."

A council spokesperson said: “It is important that the city’s roads and streets are safe, efficient and accessible to everyone and we constantly monitor road safety and identify any problem areas.

"Tree pruning on the road where Stanbury Avenue meets Downend has taken place to improve visibility for vehicles exiting the junction, and we will continue to monitor the area closely.

"Citizens can report their road safety concerns or request an improvement or change to the road on the council website and can also raise those concerns with their local ward member.”

The tree pruning was completed yesterday evening (Tuesday, August 25).

Avon and Somerset Police issued an appeal following the collision, which happened just before 6.30am.

Anyone who witnessed what happened, or who has dash cam footage, has been asked to contact police quoting reference number 5220188300.

The force has not confirmed what is thought to have caused the crash, nor if visibility was a factor.
