Council leader wants schools to prevent kids from attending Greta march

South Gloucestershire Council leader has written to schools asking them to “do what they can'' to stop kids from attending the Greta Thunberg march.

The world renowned climate activist will take part in a Youth Strike 4 Climate march through the city centre on Friday (February 28) and stop by a mural of herself in Bedminster.

Thousands of activists from across the country are expected to flock to the city to watch the 17-year-old give a speech on College Green at 11am.

But the leader of South Gloucestershire Council Toby Savage has written to schools within the local authority asking them to try and keep children in class tomorrow.

He said it was a shame the march didn’t take place last week during the half-term or on a weekend when it wouldn’t impact children’s education.

In a tweet posted this morning (Thursday) he said: “I've written to #SouthGlos schools asking they do what they can to keep kids in school this Friday.

“Skipping classes to attend the #GretaThunberg protest will impact their education.

“Such a shame it's being held on a school day, rather than during last week's half-term or a weekend.

Two schools in Bristol, located near to College Green, have announced that they will close on Friday.

Secondary Bristol Cathedral Choir School (BCCS) and Cathedral Primary School (CPS), both based on College Square, have confirmed they will shut for the event and any exams will be postponed.

It comes after police warned there is potential for "crushing" during Greta's visit and admitted the event may not be controlled "adequately".

Roads around Bristol city centre will be closed from 9am to 5pm tomorrow and people have been warned to expect considerable travel disruption.
