Council launches legal action over traveller camp

A popular playing field has become the latest site in Sefton to be taken up by members of the travelling community.

Dozens of vehicles, including cars and caravans, have arrived at Deansgate Park in Formby.

Taking to Twitter, Formby Conservative councillor Denise Dutton wrote: "Just picked up a message that a large number of travellers have descended on Deansgate Lane playing fields in Formby @seftoncouncil @MerseyPolice @NinaKillen"

Deansgate Park is home to Formby Junior Football Club and hosts training and games for children age 4-18, of all abilities.

People living in Formby have reacted differently to the camp on social media.

The camp is the latest in a series across Sefton over the past few weeks.

Sefton Council launched legal action on Friday (July 2) to ensure travellers could be removed from the field of the now closed-down St Ambrose Barlow College on Copy Lane, Netherton.

The local authority spent a week conducting welfare checks on the area, before being able to take steps to ensure the travellers were removed from the site.

On Friday, June 18, a group of caravans also arrived on the Thornton Bypass, on land adjacent to Brooms Cross Road.

A Sefton Council spokeswoman today told the ECHO : “We are aware of travellers on Deansgate Park, Formby and will be following the legal process to ensure they are moved on.”
