Council kicks off next stage of Wallsend flood project

Newcastle council has called for tenders to complete the next phase of its Wallsend flood mitigation program.

City of Newcastle said on Sunday that it was seeking a contractor to upgrade stormwater infrastructure at Cowper Street, including a channel bypass next to the existing bridge to help water flow more easily through Ironbark Creek.

The creek would be widened, realigned and flanked by sandstone as it leads into Wallsend Park.

The council called for tenders last month for demolishing a vacant building next to the Nelson Street bridge to allow future widening of the Ironbark Creek stormwater channel.

Widening the Hunter Water-owned channel and replacing the Tyrrell Street, Nelson Street and Boscawen Street bridges are key aspects of the flood mitigation plan.

"By upgrading this section of underground stormwater system with larger drains, we hope to see a reduction in damaging flash flooding in the centre of Wallsend," lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.

Meanwhile, the council has called for tenders to replace the slide at Lambton Pool.

The successful tenderer will deliver a report on the existing slide's structural integrity before designing and building a replacement.
