Council issues update on £150 council tax rebate payments

Wirral Council has issued an update on the £150 council tax energy rebate as some of those eligible are yet to claim the cash.

The council has issued a "final call" for those living in the borough who are eligible for their £150 council tax rebate payment. 80% of those who have already applied for the payment have received it, with the remaining percentage still waiting on their payment to come through.

The deadline to make an application for the cash, which was first announced in February, is at the end of this month, on Wednesday, August 31. The applications will then be processed by the end of September: the deadline given by the government.

However, Wirral Council was careful to note that missing the deadline will not mean that people will not be entitled to the rebate. If the deadline is missed by an eligible household the rebate will be transferred to the council tax account related to the property and will be used to offset future payments or for a refund outside the government's deadlines.

A spokesperson for the council said: "The application window will close on the 31st August to ensure all payments are processed by 30th September, as required by the government. To date, more than 80% of eligible residents have received their payments, with other applicants currently having their applications processed.

"The team are working through these applications as quickly as possible to process payments. The council is keen to stress than no resident will lose their entitlement to the payment - any rebate still unclaimed by the end of September will be transferred to the Council Tax Account relating to the eligible property.

"This can then either used to offset future payments or can be refunded outside of the government’s timeframe.

"However, in order to receive the payment at the earliest opportunity, all remaining eligible recipients are urged to apply online if possible. People need their Council Tax Reference Number and Property reference number. Full details and applications can be found on the Council website."
