Council issues deadline to travellers at illegal encampment

Travellers camped illegally on council owned land in Weston-super-Mare have been given until 6pm today to leave - or face court.

A group of travellers parked up on land at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre last night.

The group of around nine caravans first arrived in the resort earlier this month, moving onto playing fields in Locking.

Travellers evicted from Weston-super-Mare seafront site set up another illegal camp in town

After being moved on from the playing fields, they stopped temporarily at the Beach Lawns on Wednesday before moving on to land at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre last night.

The land is owned by North Somerset Council and officers have been on site conducting welfare checks on the group today.

Council chiefs have now ordered the group to leave by 6pm today.

However if they do not leave of their own accord the council faces applying to the magistrates court for a possession order for the land.

Police descend on travellers' camp on Weston-super-Mare seafront

Council spokesman Richard Turner said: "There are nine caravans and associated vehicles at Hutton Moor.

"An officer visited them this morning to carry out health and welfare checks.

"We have issued a notice to leave the land by 6pm today.

"We will visit the site again on Monday.

"If the travellers have not complied with the notice and are still there we will make an application to the court for a possession order."

Land at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre is a popular stop off point with travellers.

Last June a group parked up on the land before being moved on by the local authority.

North Somerset Council spends thousands of pounds each year on dealing with illegal traveller encampments.

As well as officer time and the cost of applying to the magistrates court for an order to evict the groups there are also the costs of cleaning up sites after illegal encampments.

Travellers have set up illegal camp on this seafront site in Weston-super-Mare

Last summer the authority was forced to play 'cat and mouse' with traveller groups who, after being evicted from one site, simply moved to another close by.

Each time the authority has to carry out welfare checks, ask the group to leave and if they do not comply, apply to the courts to move them on.

Currently the council has no transient sites for travellers where they can be moved onto.

However the district does offer a number of permanent pitches for the travelling community including the Willowmead site and a newly developed site at the Old Junction Yard, both in Weston-super-Mare.

There are also privately operated traveller camps in the district.
