Council investigating staff involved in Coatbridge 'social distancing swally' during lockdown

A Scots local authority has launched a probe after staff were thought to be involved in a "social distancing swally".

We told how a large gathering of people defied lockdown rules and gathered together in the Kirkwood area of Coatbridge on Saturday.

Some took to social media telling authorities to “f**k yer social distancing”.

Now North Lanarkshire Council have confirmed they have launched a probe after it was reported that two members of staff were involved in the gathering.

Up to 30 people drank Buckfast, MD 2020 and vodka on the wasteland area in Coatbridge.

Friends had got together after the funeral of James McKenna, whose cause of death is still being investigated.

James' family had requested people observe social distancing while paying their respects.

One of those in attendance posted a selfie on Instagram commenting: “Away for a social distance swally way ma bestos probs be in the cells for 4”.

She also posted a photo of the group with the comment: “Rip James” .

Another male planning to attend goaded authorities when he posted “f**k yer social distancing”. He later made his account private.

A North Lanarkshire Council spokesperson said: “We don’t comment on individual employee circumstances, but we are looking into this matter.”
