Council investigates after 'ridiculous' number of signs advertising a paving company appear in north Bristol

Bristol City Council is investigating after a “ridiculous” number of signs advertising a paving company appeared on lampposts around north Bristol.

Police also sent a squad car after a man was spotted standing on the roof of a van to attach one of the signs to a lamppost in Henleaze last week.

Prestige Patio and Driveways, the company at the centre of the allegations, did not wish to comment.

Henbury resident Daniel Boyle, who reported the "flyposting", said he was shocked by the number of advertisements that appeared around the streets of Henleaze, Brentry and Westbury-on-Trym on July 3.

Mr Boyle said there were at least a dozen signs advertising Prestige Patio and Driveways in Northover Road alone and that they were all “13 to 14 feet in the air”.

Mr Boyle said he was annoyed by the number of signs and their height, which he thought would be distracting for drivers, and concerned at the “dangerous” manner in which they were being put up.

He said he spotted a man standing “precariously” on the roof of a Prestige truck fixing one of the signs to a lamppost in Northover Road.

Mr Boyle claimed the man told him it was “okay” to put the signs up because his boss had a “deal” with the council.

A man who confirmed he was “in charge” of Prestige Patios and Driveways, but who did not wish to give his name, replied “no comment” when asked about the signs by Bristol Live.

Mr Boyle said: “For the last couple of months this company has been putting up boards in and around the around the area. They’re normally just above head height, they’re there for a while then they disappear.

“But I just could not believe the amount of signs that they had put up,” he said. “I thought ‘this is ridiculous. I feel like I’m living in an advert’.”

Mr Boyle reported his concerns about flyposting to Bristol City Council and rang Avon and Somerset Police to report his concerns for the welfare of the man putting up the signs.

A police spokesman confirmed an officer provided safety advice to the employee at 10.40am on July 3.

Anyone caught flyposting can be fined £150 by the council. If they don’t pay the fine within 14 days, offenders can be taken to court where they could be fined up to £2,500 and you get a criminal record.

A spokesman for the council said they could not provide any comment because an investigation into the incident was taking place.
