Council hiring seven members of staff each with salaries of up to £85k a year

A Welsh council had advertised several new positions with some whopping salaries up for grabs.

Newport City Council is currently looking to fill seven 'head of service' roles as part of a restructure of its chief officer team.

Originally proposed last year, the restructure was given the go-ahead at a council meeting in June 2021. At that meeting the council said a review by the chief executive said its "existing structural arrangements are no longer fit for purpose."

It said its "workforce has decreased considerably" and that "staff numbers have reduced by almost a fifth and the most senior leadership capacity by around 40 per cent."

It said the pandemic, climate emergency, Newport's growing population and changing nature of public services meant it needed to restructure its executive team.

While some of the roles have been renamed, three of them - head of housing & communities, head of prevention & inclusion, and head of environment & public protection - are entirely new.

The salaries aren't to be sniffed at - the lucky person appointed into any of the new roles will receive between £78,937 and £85,001 per year. At the cheapest, that adds up to a total labour bill of £552,559 per year.

The following roles are available:

  • Head of housing & communities
  • Head of prevention & inclusion
  • Head of children's services
  • Head of city services
  • Head of people, policy & transformation
  • Head of regeneration & economic development
  • Head of environment & public protection

According to last June's council meeting the council said there would be "no detrimental impact planned to the seven current heads of service in post, although some services will be re-aligned to different reportees".

Since it was announced three new directors have been appointed, and the new heads of service positions are the second phase of the restructure.

Newport City Council said it had a "number of vacancies as a result of the restructure, retirements and internal talent progression".
