Council grant permission for new Signature Living apartments

Signature Living has been given approval to build more apartments as part of a Liverpool city centre building conversion.

Earlier this week, Liverpool Council's planning committee gave approval for an extra 16 apartments in the lower floors of Kingsway House on Hatton Gardens.

It is one of the first times the company's development proposals have been to the city's planners since the brand's parent company, Signature Living Group, fell into administration last year with debts of £113m.

It later said it had reached a refinancing deal with investors and that its "future is now stronger than ever".

The larger plans for Kingsway House predate the company's fall into administration.

The 1960s era office building was used as a shelter for the city's homeless in the winter of 2017/18 but was later at the centre of proposals to convert it into more than 100 apartments.

Documents provided to the council's planning committee said the application for more flats was submitted because it had been decided that the ground floor, which was going to be office space, would be better utilised as residential space.

The document said: "The application premises, formerly used as Council office accommodation, has been vacant for some time and detracted from the street scene.

"Works are currently progressing on site to implement previous approvals to extend and convert the upper floors to provide residential apartments.

"Previous permissions granted have proposed the ground and mezzanine levels be fully used for commercial purposes.

"The applicants have decided that only a small office area (40.4sqm) will be provided on the ground floor. The remaining areas will be converted into 16 apartments to compliment the approved units on the upper levels."

A representative of the company at the meeting said the rest of the conversion of Kingsway House was largely completed and that work on the ground floor would start shortly.
