North Lanarkshire Council's planning committee has consented to the construction of 142 homes just south of Bargeddie.
PAMG Manse Limited and Barratt Homes sought planning permission for the development which consists of 118 houses from two-bedroomed terraces to four-bedroom detached houses and 24 two-bedroomed flats.
The 6.7 hectare site is currently an enclosed field which has been empty for years.
Lying northeast of Bargeddie, it is bounded by Manse Road and a railway line to the north, residences to the south and east, and the M73 to the west.
A single representation, seeking information on local drainage and expressing concern that a proposed narrowing of of Manse Road will negatively affect heavy goods vehicles leaving a nearby yard.
Drainage will be inspected by an engineer and the road narrowing has been deleted from the plans.
The board unanimously agreed to grant planning permission subject to conditions recommended by council officers.
With nearby St Kevin's and Bargeddie Primary Schools currently operating near or over capacity the developers have also agreed in principle to contribute £1.1m to improving education provision.
