Council give go ahead for Wishaw Ex-Servicemen's Club to be demolished

The council has given the go-ahead to demolish a building described as a Wishaw institution.

The local authority agreed to the demolition of Wishaw Ex-Servicemen’s Club with the value of the work expected to cost in the region of £20,000.

Applicants Cowal Design Consultants have until June 2022 to demolish the famous old building.

When asked on plans for the site by the Wishaw Press, a Cowal spokesman stated it was the intention for the area to be used for social housing.

However, North Lanarkshire Council confirmed a building warrant was given for the demolition of the building but hadn’t yet received a planning application at this stage.

The Ex-Servicemen’s Club, which first opened in 1953, closed its doors for the final time in January last year citing a lack of funds.

At the time of the closure, the club had around 140 members and had also been used as a base for community groups and a venue for private functions.

At the time of the closure, Wishaw councillor Fiona Fotheringham described the closure as “a blow to the people of Wishaw”.

She said: “This iconic venue holds many memories for local people being used for family parties and gatherings, funerals, fundraisers and even fitness classes.

“It is unfortunate that membership has declined and they are unable to sustain the club further. I have contacted them directly to express my concern and offer support.”

The club had been put on the market with offers of over £110,000 being considered for the building.
