Council funeral services limited to 10 mourners in North Tyneside

Numbers of mourners at North Tyneside Council funeral services have been limited as the coronavirus death toll rises.

This comes as yesterday saw the death toll in England rise from from 335 to 422 - a jump of 87 and the largest day-on-day increase in the number of deaths since the outbreak began.

So far, 20 people in North Tyneside have been diagnosed with Covid-19.

Now, the borough has capped the number of people allowed to attend funeral services in a bid to slow down the pandemic.

Services at Tynemouth and Whitley Bay crematoriums, as well as the three burial chapels at Preston, Holy Cross and Dudley, are limited to no more than 10 mourners and it is advised that congregations space themselves out as much as possible.

The office at Preston cemetery has been closed but the team can still be contacted by email and telephone.

Staff at Preston cemetery can be contacted on : bereavement@northtyneside.gov.uk or by calling 0191 643 6070.
