Council forced to shut Galway diving spot 'until further notice' after large gathering

A popular Galway diving spot has been shut by the council this morning due to large crowds gathering.

Galway County Council issued a statement on Tuesday morning citing concerns around social distancing at Blackrock diving tower as the main reason.

Pictures and videos had emerged in recent days of people enjoying the good weather at the popular spot.

The council said this morning: "Due to large crowds gathering and issues with maintaining social distancing, Blackrock Diving Tower has been closed this morning until further notice."

The area is the go to spot for people in the area when the sun is shining with locals having to find somewhere else to enjoy the good weather now.

The Salthill promenade spot is an iconic tourist hub and is described by tourist site Visit Galway as a "must visit".

Councils across the country had to take similar measures in the last few days with the heat leading to big gatherings at coastal spots.

Global Covid-19 cases hit 20 million

Wexford County Council said "huge crowds" descended at the county's main beaches on Saturday and urged people to stay away on Sunday saying "no on wants another lockdown".

And Met Eireann is forecasting more good weather this week with temperatures expected to reach 25C on Wednesday.
