Council employee used wife's bank to receive kickbacks, CCC claims

The council employee was stood down and eventually sacked after an internal investigation.

A former Queensland council employee who allegedly received more than $120,000 in kickbacks from a contractor has been caught up in a Crime and Corruption Commission sting.

The 71-year-old Charters Towers man is a former engineering department employee of the Etheridge Shire Council in Far North Queensland and was one of three people charged with corruption by the CCC.

The man's wife, 52, and a 47-year-old company director from Brisbane were also charged.

The 71-year-old is also facing charges of stealing a set of Queensland police handcuffs.

The CCC alleges he used his wife's credit union account to collect $120,492 in illegal payments from the Brisbane company director, who had been awarded more than $1 million in contracted work from the Etheridge Shire Council between October 2013 and November 2016.

It is understood the contract was for roadworks and repairs after cyclone damage, which was funded through National Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRAA) money.

The council employee was stood down and eventually sacked after an internal investigation.

The trio are due to face the Brisbane Magistrates Court on October 31.

Etheridge Shire Mayor Warren Devlin declined to comment.
