Council comments over fake shark warning signs in Co Down

Fake shark warnings have been posted at a seafront – and it has prompted amateur detectives to figure out who is responsible.

One “joke” sign in Ballyholme beach, North Down, appears to belong to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

It warns visitors of shark sightings – except on Tuesdays, when the spotters are playing bowls.

A second sign with the Ards and North Down Borough Council logo warns: “Racists, bigots, jugglers, yoga teachers and anyone called Brian, philanderers and anyone who steals workplace stationery are all banned from this area.”

A spokesperson for the council said: “Council was advised about this signage by members of the public over the weekend. The signs were not put up by the council.

“While we can appreciate some of the humour, we will remove them as they are covering signage the council is required to display. We would ask those responsible not to repost the signs.”

Last night, DAERA had not responded to a request for comment.
