Council chief admits concerns over lack of social and affordable Docklands housing are 'legitimate'

The chief executive of Dublin City Council has admitted there are "legitimate" concerns over the lack of social and affordable housing in the Docklands area.

Owen Keegan was responding to a column in yesterday's Irish Times which warned that tech companies were pushing out existing populations due to skyrocketing rents.

The article likened the situation to San Francisco, where even tech company employees could no longer afford to live in the area.

Mr Keegan told the paper today the article raised "legitimate" issues and there was "a lot in it I wouldn't dispute".

But he added that it was incorrect to say the council was not acquiring any social housing in the area.

He said: "In some cases the type of unit is just not appropriate. We can't really control the spec and so you could be paying the type of prices that would house two families elsewhere."

Meanwhile, the first application for the redevelopment of the former Glass Bottle site in nearby Ringsend have been lodged with the council.

The application includes plans for streets, transportation, water services and utilities infrastructure, as well as public realm and public amenity spaces for the Poolbeg West Strategic Development Zone.

The amenities will include a dog park, coastal park, village green and central boulevard.

Under the fast-track planning system, if permission is granted by the council it cannot be appealed to An Bord Pleanala, meaning work could start at the site within two months after it is granted.

Up to 3,500 apartments have been earmarked for the site.

This must include at least 900 social and affordable homes.
