Council checking contracts for Russian links amid Ukraine war

Wirral Council is looking into its contracts to make sure they are not supporting Vladimir Putin’s regime in any way, as Russian forces continue to devastate Ukraine.

Since the conflict began just over a week ago, the United Nations has said more than one million people have fled Ukraine.

As the invasion continues, Russian forces have gained control of the key port city of Kherson, on Ukraine's southern coast. It is the first major city to fall.

Mr Putin’s regime has received widespread condemnation across the world for its actions and the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has launched an investigation into possible war crimes amid the suspected bombing of civilians by Russian forces.

Speaking at tonight’s meeting of Wirral Council’s Adult Social Care and Public Health Committee, Labour councillor Yvonne Nolan said: “We have been informed today by the chief executive that all of our council contracts that may have any links to Russia are being currently examined.

“They’re all being looked at to make sure we’re not actually purchasing or in any way supporting that regime.

“Everything is being looked at.”

Shelling continues in the strategic port city of Mariupol, with the city's mayor saying Russian forces have cut off electricity, food, water and heating.

At least 22 people have been killed in air strikes on Chernihiv, a city around 70 miles north of Kyiv.

A second round of talks between Russian and Ukrainian negotiators has taken place in Belarus, with Ukraine calling for a ceasefire and humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians.

But Vladimir Putin claimed in a televised speech that the invasion was "going according to plan".
