Council carer dies in horror road crash after trying to help hurt animal

A council carer died in a horror road crash after she had stopped to help an injured animal.

Mary Logan, 62, crashed her van into a car as she tried to turn on the A73 in Thankerton, Lanarkshire.

Mary, who worked for South Lanarkshire Council, had been travelling with a colleague when tragedy struck.

They had been visiting clients when they spotted an injured animal by the road in January last year.

But after they moved on after failing to find the creature, they were involved in a fatal collision.

Mary was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow with severe injuries but passed away two days later. Her colleague, Gemma Love, and the car driver escaped serious injury.

Police found road conditions were good and the other driver was not at fault for the collision.

A fatal accident inquiry at Lanark Sheriff Court has ruled nothing could have prevented Mary’s death.

Sheriff Nikola Stewart said: “In the course of their travel, they passed an animal in apparent distress. They returned to the scene but failed to spot the animal.

“The accident occurred as the deceased attempted to turn the vehicle in order to resume their journey towards their next service user.”
