Council bows to pressure to reopen Meadows loos - will this end the non-stop outdoor peeing?

Residents living near the Meadows were celebrating today after the council agreed to re-open public toilets there.

Visitors to the meadows have been repeatedly caught urinating in the park, in bushes, side streets and even houses, to the fury of residents.

But today locals were delighted at the prospect of the yellow tide receding as public loos re-opened.

Daniel Connell, an admin of the Meadows Share Facebook page said: "Win!

"So, after a lot of pressure, the council has finally reopened the public toilets at the east end of the Meadows, by the playground."

He added: "Thanks everyone who wrote and called them, always nice to have little victories where we can."

Residents of the meadows have had a lot to put up with lately, from late-night raves on the grass to enormous piles of rubbish.

Residents even took it upon themselves to clear up the mess recently, not before arranging the trash on the grass to spell out a heartbreaking message.

As Mr Connell pointed out, with new bins and re-opened loos there is no longer any excuse for the Meadows to continue being covered in trash and urine.

"Anyone for whom having a bin ten meters away and a loo a two minute walk continues to dump their litter and piss on someone's front door should just quietly excuse themselves from this group, the Meadows itself, and I guess probably the whole greater metropolitan area".

The council notice on the re-opening of loos was described as 'shirty'.

The council statement in full

Public toilets were closed in March across Scotland due to Covid-19 regulations and most of them remain closed.

There is no statutory requirement for local authorities to provide public toilets and the Scottish Government does not help to support this service therefore we are unable to open as many toilets as we’d like to.

To ensure you keep safe, we will be providing enhanced cleaning, as well as enabling physical distancing, which needs many more staff, so we are only able to open toilets that we have identified are in locations where they would be most needed and are big enough to allow for safe use. The toilets below are open:

  • Cramond
  • Hawes Pier
  • Hope Park
  • Pipe Lane
  • Ross Bandstand
  • Saughton Park

Opening hours

From Monday 13 July we will be open from 11am to 6pm.

Toilets may need to be closed at short notice.

Please expect restrictions on the number of people that can use the facilities.

If you develop Covid-19 symptoms after using a public toilet please  check test and protect
