Council bosses pledge to spend £350,000 revamping local play parks

West Lothian Council will invest around £350,000 this year on building and renovating play parks across West Lothian.

The council inspects and maintains play areas all year round with regular safety inspections taking place every 10 working days. Each play area is also reviewed for refurbishment purposes and to determine if equipment needs replaced.

For the year 2019/2020 there is expected to be 20 projects taking place around West Lothian.

The play park at Preston Road, Linlithgow (pictured) is just one example from the series of work due to take place over the course of the year.

The council has invested £20,000 to refurbish the play area.

The council has repaired and upgraded features and added a new aerial runway.

New seats and bins at the park have also been installed. A rotten retaining wall surrounding the play area has also been removed, with brickwork also being repaired at the south east entrance. The wood chip safer surface has also been topped up.

Some of the other planned works include a £22,000 refurbishment of Avenue Park, Mid Calder, including replacement swings and new park furniture and there will be a £25,000 play area upgrade at Marrfield Park in Uphall Station.

Housing developer contributions will help towards bigger projects such as the creation of a brand new, £115,000 new play area and trim trail at Eastfield Park in Fauldhouse and £50,000 for a new play area and ball court at Russel Road in Wester Inch, Bathgate.

Executive councillor for the environment, Tom Conn said: “Opportunities to participate in play activities are essential to the healthy mental, physical, social and emotional development of children.

“We are committed to ensuring that West Lothian’s play parks provide a safe and enjoyable environment for young people and their families and our officers put in a tremendous amount of work to ensure they are of the highest standard.”
