Council borrowing soars to its highest ever level £128billion under Tories

Under the Tories, council borrowing has soared to its highest ever level with local authorities currently owing £128billion.

When David Cameron took power in 2010 councils owed £70bn but after 11 years of Tory rule that figure has risen by 83%, meaning public services are now being paid for “on credit”.

One Conservative-run borough council – Spelthorne in Surrey – has outstanding loans of £1.1bn, the equivalent of £11,000 for every resident.

Rising debts have left councils struggling to stay solvent with two going “bankrupt” since 2018.

Earlier this year it emerged 12 English councils were in rescue talks with the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Labour ’s Shadow Local Government Minister Jeff Smith MP said: “Cuts of 60% to council funding by the Conservatives have put council finances in dire straits.

"Councils are under more pressure than ever.”

MHCLG figures show most of the 505 UK councils and local authorities rely on borrowing to provide services.

An MHCLG spokeswoman said: “We have committed £45bn to councils to help support their communities and local businesses.”
