Council bid to save green buffer between Nailsea and Backwell from development

A green buffer between Nailsea and Backwell could be given protected status - to stop it being swamped by development.

Nailsea Town Council has applied to North Somerset Council for land at The Perrings to be registered as a town green.

The land has been used as an open space since the development at The Perrings was built more than 40 years ago.

As well as being popular with local residents and dog walkers it is also a route from the town to Backwell Lake.

It is also used by students as a safe route to Backwell School and by commuters accessing the railway station.

The land is currently owned by developers Persimmon.

And although no plans have currently been put in for it to be developed, councillors are keen to see it protected in perpetuity.

An application for town green status was submitted to North Somerset Council last Spring.

But due to the coronavirus pandemic, legal work had not moved forward.

Now the authority has started the legal process of advertising the application with people having until April 8 to comment.

Nailsea Town Council clerk Jo Duffy said: “The open land on The Perrings has been a green open space since the housing estate was built.

“The land has been in common use for over 40 years and is used by a significant number of local people for activities including dog walking, picnics, blackberry picking, children's play and tobogganing.

“It also allows accessibility to Backwell Lake and the train station and also for school children walking to and from Backwell Secondary School.

“It is a much loved green space in the town and provides a green buffer between Nailsea and Backwell and the council is keen to protect it and prevent any future development.”

The land also used to have play equipment on it.

But it had to be decommissioned after it reached the end of its life

If the town council is successful in its bid for town green status, new play equipment could be installed.

Nailsea has already seen many of its green spaces swallowed up for housing with developments at Engine Lane, The Uplands and Youngwood Lane.
