Council backs Scottish Government plan to empower communities

West Lothian Council has backed national plans to give local people the chance to play a more active part in their communities.

The council executive has backed Scottish Government proposals for community empowerment, and staff are looking at ways in which community groups can work with council in communities.

In a report to the executive Andrew Sneddon, business change lead officer, said: “Officers have begun to develop proposals for local consideration.

"These include increased community empowerment with communities working with public bodies to deliver positive outcomes.”

West Lothian has already developed some programmes such as lunch clubs and school clubs where parents and community groups work with council staff often in council owned premises to deliver specific services.

While there is no firm guidance on how  community empowerment should develop on a national basis West Lothian plans to continue to develop projects as well as looking at ways to integrate bodies such as community councils into local decision making.

Last month the council agreed to support a new forum for community councils in the county and invite community councillors to attend local area committees.
