Coulson to appear as trial witness

Andy Coulson, the editor who maintains he didn't know his News of the World reporters were hacking into voicemails, is to be called as trial witness next week.

According to The Drum, the prime minister's director of communications will appear at the Tommy Sheridan perjury trial in Glasgow high court.

Coulson was editor of the NoW in 2006 when Sheridan won £200,000 in damages during a defamation action against the paper.

Sheridan and his wife, Gail, were later charged with several counts of perjury. Their trial began on 4 October, but four of the charges against them were dropped last week.

The Guardian reported on 14 October that Sheridan had included Coulson's name in a list of defence witnesses.
