"Couldn't afford Xhaka" - Arsenal fans bemused by Roma's £34million Tammy Abraham deal

Arsenal target Tammy Abraham is set to complete a move to Roma after he arrived in Italy to finalise the details ahead of a £34 million transfer.

The forward has been at Chelsea since he was seven-years-old and but will leave Stamford Bridge to reunite with former boss Jose Mourinho.

This deal is due to be their second-biggest ever in the club's history after Patrick Schick moved from Sampdoria in 2018.

However, Roma had previously said that they weren't willing to pay up to £20 million for Granit Xhaka from Arsenal when they were linked with the midfielder earlier in the window.

The Swiss international will now stay at the Emirates Stadium this season and some Arsenal supporters are wondering why they weren't able to cough up the money to sign Xhaka.

Soon after the move broke down, it was reported that the 28-year-old will sign a new five-year deal but that is yet to be announced by the club.

@aaronvine21 : Wait I thought Roma were broke! They couldn’t afford Xhaka but can spend €40 million on Tammy.

@camdengunner : So Roma are paying £34m for Abraham but couldn’t pay £20m for Xhaka... am I missing something.

@aladingooner : Now Roma have got money?? Poor Xhaka...

@Eromoseileso : So Roma could agree a fee of £34m with Chelsea for Tammy Abraham, but vehemently declined to improve on their bid of £12m by at least £5m for Xhaka. It shows they didn't rate him enough to improve on their initial bid.

@bringmemmyjoy : Roma can buy Abraham for €40m but cannot afford Xhaka. Mourinho trolls Arsenal.

@edashwhy : Roma actually tried to bump us on the Xhaka deal you know. Loool. €17m for the Swiss captain with years of experience in top leagues, but will pay $40m for Tammy Abraham?

Arsenal could still strengthen their squad further before the transfer window shuts, with Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale linked to move to the Emirates.
