Could you pass the 11 Plus? Most parents failed to get these five questions right

The new school year has just begun and for thousands of Year 6 pupils around the country it is straight back to work as they prepare for the 11 Plus exams.

But they might be well advised not to seek help from their parents.

A survey has found that the average parent in England would fail the test based on five sample questions.

Over 2,000 parents took a test arranged by tuition provider Explore Learning and the average score was only 54 per cent.

Pass marks for the 11 Plus are usually over 80 per cent, although the marks do vary across different regions and also from year-to-year.

The 11 Plus tests pupils on their maths, English grammar and reasoning abilities and are still used in over 30 local authority areas in England for entrance to selective schools.

Only a small minority of parents in the survey were able to get all five questions correct and most fell short of the pass mark.

Charlotte Gater, Head of Curriculum at Explore Learning said: “The quiz results show just how challenging the 11-plus can be and why preparation is key.

"If you have never come across these style questions before it is difficult to know how to solve the problems. This is the challenge for lots of parents when trying to support their children in their preparation at home."
