Could there be a lockdown announcement for Greater Manchester today?

Greater Manchester continues to teeter on the edge of being moved into Tier 3 restrictions.

Talks are said to be continuing between the government and local leaders on pushing the region into the strictest measures - joining the Liverpool City Region and Lancashire.

It comes as concerns for Greater Manchester's intensive care bed capacity begin to grow with a leaked document also claiming hospitals in Salford, Stockport and Bolton were at maximum capacity by Friday due to the resurgence of coronavirus, The Guardian reports.

But Andy Burnham said on Monday morning that "nothing's changed" as far as he is concerned and his continues to push for protection for "low-paid workers, people who are self-employed and supporting businesses and preventing them from collapsing."

As for whether there will be an announcement today, communities secretary Robert Jenrick told BBC Breakfast: "We have had productive discussions in Greater Manchester over the weekend. I am hopeful that we can now bring this to a conclusion."

He then added: "People in Greater Manchester want a single, co-ordinated, public health message.

"That is what the Prime Minister is keen to do. That is why we have gone to so much trouble to try to reach an agreement with local leaders.

"I hope that they will, today, come forward, support us and that we can reach that sort of agreement.

"If not, then we will have to consider other options.

"Because, obviously, the Government has over-arching responsibility to protect people in all parts of the country, including in Greater Manchester, but … doing so by imposition has never been our desired approach."

Mr Jenrick also said 'further resources' have been offered to Greater Manchester if the region goes into Tier 3 lockdown.
