In Outlander, many of the characters form special bonds, from the centuries-spanning love affair of Jamie and Claire Fraser to the bromance between Rupert MacKenzie and Angus Mhor.
However, one of the most special is between Jamie Fraser, played by Sam Heughan, and his godfather Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser (Duncan Lacroix).
The pair have always been close and there were few moments more touching than when they were reunited almost by accident in America in season four.
Their deep connection has left many fans speculating about the truth about just how close they actually are.
Could Murtagh actually be Jamie's biological father?
Murtagh loved Jamie's mother
A bit of a romantic, Murtagh is related to Brian Fraser, Jamie's dad, but also vied with him for Ellen's (Jamie's mother) heart.
Though she eventually chose Brian, Murtagh vowed he would protect her children as though they were his own and was eventually appointed Jamie's Godfather.
But could he and Ellen ever have had an affair?
Rumours among fans began swirling after Jocasta told Brianna about Ellen’s pregnancy before wedlock, with people putting two and two together.
However, the baby wouldn't have been Jamie but his older brother William.
What does Diana say?
And if that's not enough, Diana Gabaldon has even taken to Twitter to denounce this particular rumour.
After one person tweeted: "If I remember right, Brian and Ellen was together for several months before finally marrying. But what an interesting twist the story would be if Murtagh is the father."
To which Diana responded curtly: "He wasn't, believe me."
So there you have it, straight from the horse's mouth. Though Murtagh does love Jamie like a son, he's not his father.
