Could Sunderland's players be asked to take a pay cut?

The suspension of the football season has reportedly led Championship clubs to consider a salary cap plan - and League One and Two sides could follow suit.

The Telegraph reports the panic has prompted several Championship clubs to hold a conference call on Friday to raise the prospect of temporary pay cuts for players until the season resumes.

The same title also claims League One and League Two sides such as Sunderland are also considering similar options.

A £350 million rescue fund was announced by the EFL this week for clubs in the three divisions with the season suspended until April 30 at the earliest.

However, fears the season may not resume until the summer has led panicked clubs to discuss slashing players' wages in a bid to shore up their financial future.

The reported cap would stand at £6,000 per week, which could severely impact players at some of the Championship's leading sides.

Any such proposal would undoubtedly be resisted by the Professional Footballers' Association and player agents.
