As reported by the Seattle Times, veteran quarterback Russell Wilson has apparently issued a deadline to the Seattle Seahawks for when he wants a new contract to be agreed to. Said deadline is April 15, which is when Seattle can begin their official offseason workout program.
Wilson, 30, is entering the final year of a four-year, $87.6 million contract he signed back on July 31, 2015 – the day before the start of training camp that season. That year, there was a lot of speculation and gossip being spread around Wilson and the Seahawks, asking whether or not the deal would get done.
Logic would dictate that Wilson wants to avoid the commotion this time around, which is why he’s imposing this deadline on Seattle’s front office.
The likelihood that the Seahawks would simply let their longtime franchise quarterback is minimal, but nevertheless, it is something to consider if negotiations are not completed by the time Wilson wants it.
Will they continue into the offseason? Into training camp again? Will Wilson insist on no further negotiations at all until after the season is over and he can potentially test the open market?
For the Miami Dolphins, this opens the door to an interesting possibility. If Wilson and/or the front office feels that the two sides cannot agree to a new deal, then the Seahawks could potentially attempt to trade Wilson for what would most certainly be a first-round pick and more.
With the Dolphins amassing draft capital, they could potentially grab their franchise quarterback without having to question whether or not he will be become what they’re hoping for. Wilson is a proven commodity, and is known for pulling off incredible stunts with sub-par offensive line play. He would instantly make things much easier for Miami if he were to be acquired.
Should the Dolphins look into this more closely? Or continue on the path of charting unknown waters with a rookie?
