'Could score goals in the right set-up' - The inside line on Bristol City target Jordan Hugill

News broke on Thursday that Bristol City are in the race for West Ham striker Jordan Hugill as the Robins look to find a forward to add quality to their frontline.

We understand that Hugill has been of interest to City for some time, but as Lee Johnson and Mark Ashton assess their targets with the window to close two weeks on Thursday it may well be that the club juggles several different options, with Lucas Joao and Kieffer Moore other possible additions to provide competition for Famara Diedhiou.

In doing some research on the prospects of Hugill arriving, we spoke to our colleagues up at Middlesbrough to hear about how the former Preston North End man did at the Riverside Stadium last season.

Gazette Live Boro reporter Anthony Vickers provides the lowdown on the 27-year-old forward's time up that way.

"He works his socks off and in the right set up he could score goals," said Vickers.

"There's so much honest endeavour from him.

"He arrived injured last season and it took him a bit of time to get going. He played up front on his own when he did play.

"Tony Pulis preferred a 4-5-1 formation and it meant that Hugill was often isolated when in attack, with few midfielders getting up to provide good support.

"Britt Assombalonga was the other to get a lot of games up front on his own, but he scored more oftem.

"We spoke to Jordan and he was a nice bloke. It's just a pity that it hasn't worked out for him up this way because this was a dream move for him: he's from the north east and is a Middlesbrough fan.

"He was a season ticket holder at the Riverside when he was younger.

"He didn't get enough first-team games but that was partly because of Pulis' tactics of playing just one upfront.

"I'm sure he'll be keen to leave West Ham for first-team football but wages may be a problem for a lot of clubs.

"Middlesbrough declined him earlier in the summer. The club need to trim the wage bill here - and even though we expect that to happen, with Aden Flint's announcement imminent, we don't see Assombalonga leaving because to replace him would cost just as much.

"There's no point in letting your main goal-scorer go to help the finances only to splash out another £8m or so to bring in a replacement," said Vickers.

One to keep an eye on then, Bristol City fans.
